If you've ever felt the urge to build something, listen up. On October 11-13th a very special edition of Startup Weekend is hitting Atlanta. The Georgia Tech Invention Studio is hosting a 'Maker' style event presented by lead sponsors The Coca-Cola Company and General Electric.

What is a Maker event? Glad you asked! Maker events are focused on building physical products during the weekend...awesome right? And better yet, it's made possible because by access to state-of-the-art tools and expertise provided by the Georgia Tech Invention Studio. The facility offers micro-controllers, laser cutting equipment, 3D printers, metal working areas, woodworking tools, and more, making the possibilities of what can be created during the weekend just about endless.

Come pitch, join a team, iron out your business model, and build away!

  • Pitches Start
  • Attendees vote for the top ideas
  • Teams start forming and discussing ideas
  • Start to formalize teams and take an inventory of skills. Be honest, and direct about what resources and skills are needed for the weekend. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Saturday

Oct 12
  • Arrive, simple breakfast & coffee
  • Teams formed and setting up workspace for the weekend
  • Lunch
  • Call for needs & skills
  • Coaches help teams one-on-one. They are here to help!
  • Dinner
  • Mid weekend check-in, status reports, call for help
  • Finished for the day. You may stay and work as late as the venue will allow

Oct 13

  • Call for help (this is self motivated, so don’t be shy)

James E. Schutz

Partner, Technology Law

Jim counsels clients on the protection, licensing, and enforcement of intellectual property rights and has extensive experience in Patent litigation and prosecution. Jim also regularly counsels clients on technology development and licensing agreements, with an emphasis on software products, and participates in corporate deals requiring the analysis of intellectual property assets.

Jim represents clients in a variety of industries, including computer software and hardware, computer networks, wireless communication systems, telecommunications devices, semiconductor chips, medical devices, and industrial manufacturing machinery.

Jim is actively involved in the Atlanta Startup Community. He represents several startup companies, and has given lectures on various intellectual property topics to numerous organizations including Flashpoint, Startup Weekend, Startup Chicks, AUTM, IEEE, NASA's Langley Research Center, Morehouse School of Medicine's Tech Talks and numerous student groups at Georgia Tech.

Jim holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and is experienced in hardware and software design. Jim is a frequent lecturer on intellectual property topics and is an adjunct instructor at Georgia Tech. He has also been recognized as a "Super Lawyer" and as a "Rising Star" in the field of intellectual property law by Law & Politics and Atlanta Magazine.
